Not only do honey bees collect nectar and pollen to feed themselves and their younf larvae, they also need lots of water, particularly in winter and spring when they are expanding rapidly and existing on previously stored food – this needs to be diluted in order to be digestible by the young larvae. This photo shows bees collecting fresh water from an ornamental pond – a very common sight, which people are not generally aware of.
