I think in the discussion the important message got lost. Our plans for next year had one goal: make more money for our exclusives. We are confident that’s going to happen--and much more than the 5% difference in royalty rates some of you would have hit at the old levels.

But let's cut right to it: we have good news. less

We're delighted to announce that iStockphoto's Content team will partner with the World Photography Organisation for the second year in a row, as the official pre-selection committee of the amateur competition.

Last year, a team led by member anouchka, under the Creative Direction of member lisegagne, discussed and dissected tens of thousands of images, to choose the very best. It went well. So very well indeed, that the relationship between iStock and the World Photography Organisation is stronger than ever and aiming high.

So what does all this mean for you? We want all you iStockers to enter the competition. Submit your best photographs from 2009 in the professional or amateur categories before the January 4, 2010 deadline. And yes, iStock Exclusives are eligible for the competition. Enter here.

Congrats to the iStockphoto Inspectors, and to this incredible community of artists for a job well done.

We'll be announcing more about the details of iStock's involvement in the 2010 Sony World Photography Awards soon.

2009: The year in review and a look at the future

kkthompson - Dec 08/09, 13:31

We managed to grow significantly in the worst possible economic times. We now sell three times as many files as we did back in 2006. That's pretty amazing. What's even more amazing is the average number of downloads per contributor has also risen significantly since 2006. That’s a tough feat considering how quickly the collection has grown. Volumes are so high now we can tell in our hourly reports when New York goes for lunch or when there’s a sandstorm in Sydney.

For those who foolishly insist microstock isn't an expanding market, we point to the 125,000 new members iStock adds each month. 10 years ago when we started, there were barely that many stock buyers in North America, let alone added to one company in a month. And these are often new buyers to the stock image market. There is very little cross-over between Getty Images' 'classic' customer base and our own.

Vetta snuck out of nowhere earlier this year to take the industry by storm, proving iStock customers aren't just looking for inexpensive: they also want masterful imagery, and our contributors delivered. We've been picky - very picky - with Vetta. Less than 10% of the images submitted for Vetta have made it into the collection, and that selectiveness shows.

We also greatly expanded the crossover program with Getty Images in 2009, and now have 7,000 images in the iStock Exclusive collection on gettyimages.com. And they're selling well. We've also dipped our toe into the editorial market, with some exciting initial results.

All in all, we had a ton of success in what was a rough year for a lot of other people. So give yourselves a hand. We'd like to think we've done a pretty good job here at HQ, but the real story is the increase in quality of the media submitted by our loyal contributors. It's astonishing.

So what's coming next?

Istanbul editorial iStockalypse begins!

In the lobby of the Richmond Hotel located in the European Beyoglu district of Istanbul, there are more iStockers than hotel guests, it seems. Unlike any previous iStockalypse, where iStockphoto sets up a few days worth of creative shoots to acquire fresh and topical stock for our collection, we're entering new territory. Istanbul is the first iStockalypse where iStock photograpers will learn techniques, tips and insight about photojournalism from those we think know it best: some Getty Images greats. Our Getty Images guest speaker list includes:
– Aidan Sullivan, VP Assignments, Getty Images
– Andreas Gebhard, Manager, Picture Desk, Americas Getty Images
– Tom Stoddart, Photographer
