BERLIN - JUNE 17: A tourist walks by an East German, communist-era socialist realist mural near a memorial to the 1953 East German workers' uprising on the 55th anniversary of the uprising on June 17, 2008 in Berlin, Germany. The uprising started with construction workers in East Berlin protesting against catastrophic economic conditions, and hundreds of thousands of people across what was then communist East Germany joined in violent street protests. Soviet troops intervened brutally to put down the uprising, during which up to 383 people were killed and thousands imprisoned. The memorial stands at the intersection of Leipziger Strasse and Wilhelmstrasse, where some of the protesters in 1953 were killed. (Photo by Sean Gallup)
