A detail of the facade of the Great Hall at Alexandra Palace in North London, with part of the BBC antenna visible on the right.

Alexandra Palace opened in 1873. The seven acre site in north London overlooks the city and offers panoramic views. Known as the People's Palace, it intended as a recreation centre for Victorian society. After attracting over 120,000 visitors in its first sixteen days, the building was destroyed by fire.

Less than two years later, a new building was opened. In response to financial difficulties, an act of Parliament in 1900 created the Alexandra Palace and Park Trust, which required that the palace and park be made available for public recreation in perpetuity.

In 1980, the Palace caught fire for the second time and much of it was destroyed. Development and restoration work began soon after, and the palace re-opened in 1988. It continues as a charitable trust, administered by the London borough of Haringey. The site includes an ice rink, a bar, a boating lake, a playground, an animal enclosure, and a conservation area.
