Mexican Free-Tailed bats heading out for their night-time feeding in Austin, Texas. Full moon in background in soft focus -- focus on bats.
This is a particularly challenging subject to photograph as the bats flap their wings extremely fast but only come out when there is little ambient light. A flash wouldn't work with this distance. This was shot wide open at f/2.8 while pushing the ISO a bit to 200. At this aperture, it is tricky to achieve critical focus on both the bats and moon. I focused on the bats and let the moon fall into a soft focus.
