Description
Beanstalk of common bean Phaseolus vulgaris, a pole bean. Pole beans are any kind of garden beans that climb poles. The one photographed here has white flowers.

By comparison, runner beans Phaseolus coccineus usually have red or pink flowers, and twine in the opposite direction - clockwise, or to the right.

All twining plants exhibit handedness - a tendency to twine either clockwise or counter-clockwise. Hops and honeysuckle, for example, grow in a clockwise spiral. Twining in the opposite sense are, for example, Dutchman's pipe ornamental vine and Chinese (but not Japanese) wisteria species.

Flanders and Swann, a British comedy duo, made the most of plant handedness in their song Misalliance:

The fragrant honeysuckle spirals clockwise to the sun,
And many other creepers do the same.
But some climb anti-clockwise, the bindweed does, for one,
Or Convolvulus, to give her proper name.
