Daylight view of the famous Bosphorus Bridge and Marmara Sea from shore at Asian Side of the Istanbul Strait.

Filtered mobile device photo.

The Bosphorus, ( Turkish: Boğaziçi ), also known as the Istanbul Strait ( Turkish: İstanbul Boğazı ), is a strait that forms part of the boundary between Europe and Asia. The Bosphorus, the Sea of Marmara, and the Dardanelles strait to the southwest together form the Turkish Straits. The world's narrowest strait used for international navigation, the Bosphorus connects the Black Sea with the Sea of Marmara ( which is connected by the Dardanelles to the Aegean Sea, and thereby to the Mediterranean Sea.)

Istanbul is the most crowded city in Turkey, constituting the country's economic, cultural, and historical heart. With a population of 13.9 million, the city forms one of the largest urban agglomerations in Europe and is among the largest cities in the world by population within city limits. Istanbul's vast area of 5,343 square kilometers is coterminous with Istanbul Province, of which the city is the administrative capital. Istanbul is a transcontinental city, straddling the Bosphorus, one of the world's busiest waterways in northwestern Turkey, between the Sea of Marmara and the Black Sea. Its commercial and historical center lies in Europe, while a third of its population lives in Asia.
