Medium to tall; stem hairy above, often purplish beneath. Leaves 4-10, green spirally arranged, oval elliptical, pointed. Flowers 15-50, variable in color but the sepals usually greenish or greenish-yellow and the petals pale pinkish-violet to purple-red; lip 9-10mm, the lower part dark red inside, the tip oval to heart-shaped, greenish-white, pink or purplish, the tip curved under, giving the lip a rounded appearance. Fruit smooth or rough.
Habitat: Woodland, especially beech, woodland margins and scrub, on calcareous soils, sometimes on sand dunes,
Flowering Season: July-September.
Distribution: Throughout Europe, except the far north.

The Species is quite common in Woodland margins in the Netherlands.
