Front stoops (stairways) and entrances to two brownstone houses, on a quiet, tree-lined street in the Park Slope neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York. Entire blocks are faced by uninterrupted rows of these buildings, each differing in style of stone carving, doorway and window treatments, and selection of iron stair railings. Buildings are typically 3 stories high, plus a half-underground, inhabitable lower story, and underneath that, a basement. Some are single-family dwellings, while others accommodate one or more tenant apartments in addition to the owner's own living space. The brownstones on this particular block were built in the 1870s and 80s. Brownstone was quarried in the states of New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Connecticut until popularity dwindled at the turn of the century.
