White poplar, Populus alba, with branches lopped off so severely that only the main trunks survive. This does not prevent the tree from bursting into leaf as the days grow longer, and it has probably encouraged the myriad saplings that have sprung up in the surrounding area. Cutting off tree branches often has the effect of energising the plant.
