Tawang, India - September 20, 2011: A photograph of a large Buddhist prayer wheel surrounded by smaller prayer wheels all of which are under an elaborately decorated wooden structure. The artistic paintwork is typically Buddhist. This photograph was taken in the centre of Tawang town, itself a significant town in western Arunachal Pradesh. The shot was taken in autumn.

Description

Arunachal Pradesh is in the extreme North East of India. There are many tribes that inhabit this region and the Monpa people are the predominant tribe in western Arunachal Pradesh. Monpas adopted Buddhism a while ago. There is a very important 17th Century Buddhist monastery in Tawang, a significant town in western Arunachal Pradesh. This whole region, bordering with China and the Himalayas, is mountainous and densely forested in some areas.
