Description
A salt caravan with camels and mules on the way from the Danakil Desert back to the highlands of Ethiopia. On the horizon an endless line of camels could be seen.

The camels and mules are loaded with salt plates which is produced by the Afar people at the Ass Ale salt lake in the Danakil desert. The salt is transported by the last salt caravans of the world in 5 - 6 days up to the Highlands of Northern Ethiopia.

The Danakil Desert (or Danakil Depression) in the border-triangle between Ethiopia, Eritrea and Djibouti is one of the most remote and most extreme regions of the world - it is the lowest point in Africa (- 155 metres/-550 ft below sea level) and one of the hottest places on Earth.
