A centaur (half man, half horse) was a symbol favoured by the Normans who invaded Britain in the 11th century. This symbol is etched on the stone tympanum above the door of a Norman church in Oxfordshire, in the English Midlands. The centaur is shooting an arrow into the mouth of a dragon-like creature, which has led some to the mistaken belief that it represents George and the Dragon.
Possibly added at a later date, some crude lettering spells out the word SAGITTARIUS. Sagittarius (the Archer) is the ninth sign of the zodiac, representing dates from 22 November – 21 December. Its symbol is a centaur.
