Description

In their 1858 plan for Central Park, Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux proposed an architectural "open air hall of reception." The terrace was one of the first structures built in the park. Today park visitors can stand on the upper terrace - above the arcade featured in this shot - and look across the lake to the shoreline of the Ramble, Central Park’s major woodland. The steps depicted here lead down into the arcade and then out to a sandstone terrace, the site of the beloved Angel of the Waters fountain. In 2007 intricate restoration was performed on the arcade ceiling's 15,876 elaborately patterned handmade encaustic tiles and general infrastructure.
