In their 1858 plan for Central Park, Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux proposed an architectural 'open air hall of reception.' The terrace was one of the first structures built in the park. Today park visitors can stand on the upper terrace and look across the lake (to the right of the photographer's viewpoint) to the shoreline of the Ramble, Central Park’s major woodland. Immediately to the right, just outside the shot, is the beloved Angel of the Waters fountain.
