Creeping stems solitary, tall to very tall, to 300cm, rounded, smooth, green, leafless above, but with narrow strap-like leaves under water. Inflorescence a loose cluster of stalked heads of unstalked egg-shaped spikelets, the lower bract shorter than the inflorescence; glumes red-brown, styles 3. Fruit grey-brown.
Habitat: In slow-moving rivers and streams and around lakes and ponds, often in deep water.
Flowering Season: June-August.
Distribution: Throughout Europe.

The Species is quite common in the Netherlands in its specific Habitats.
