Lowicz, Poland - June 23, 2011: Representatives of the Piarist Schools participating in the procession of Corpus Christi.

Łowicz is a well known Polish place of folk arts and crafts, but the most spectacular event of the region is the long Corpus Christi procession - most of its participants are dressed in traditional, colourful costumes.
The Corpus Christi Day is celebrated on the Thursday after Trinity Sunday in villages, towns and cities all over Poland. In smaller locations virtually the whole village or town becomes involved in an organised procession through the streets. Householders decorate their windows with religious icons. The traffic is stopped and at midday the procession leaves the Church and the people walk around the streets together stopping on route at various temporary shrines to pray. Throughout the festival the Priest walks around under processional canopy, held up by four or more men from the village or town, while boys swirl burning incense around him.
In Łowicz, participants of the procession express not only their religious faith but also their attachment to the culture of the region. In the formal procession led by the Łowicz Bishop, the procession participants reach four consecutive altars located in different places in the town.
The part of the procession wearing Łowicz folk costumes, with children pouring flowers, carrying beautifully embroidered cushions and with adults carrying statuettes of saints and high raised banners.
Łowicz folk costumes are willingly worn on religious festivals, weddings and the days of the first holy communion and during performances of folk groups. The costume for women is decorated with colourful embroidery, mostly of roses surrounded by leaves and other small flowers. Scarves are used as headgears. A characteristic feature of the costume for men is stripped, mostly orange pants. Men’s headwear is always a hat, often decorated with an embroidered velvet.
The folk art of Łowicz Region is a live phenomenon, folk groups and local craftsmen.
