An elegant and precise cut paper burst design element viewed straight on, with helpful clipping paths; can be used as a transparent shadow overlay.

Make three new layers: top of cut paper, layer underneath, and the peel of the cut paper (perhaps just fill this with white). This image contains two clipping paths: one for the surrounding cut paper, and one for the page showing through. For the underside that's peeled back, just let the peel layer show through. When you're all done with the masking, move this shadow image to the top (you'll need to convert it into a layer first), and set its layer mode to "multiply" to make it into a transparent overlay, and you'll have nice, natural shadows.

This image is an actual photograph with paper texture and natural shadows, and a geometrically correct pentagon. The surrounding area is a 7% gray, and as with all of my paper effects, the soft shadows have been painstakingly hand-tuned so they have no banding.
