When I first came to live in Florida, I quickly noticed that there are dead trees like this one everywhere -- the intense sunlight must inhibit their decay somehow, and you sometimes encounter whole stands of them. They are extremely important for the health of the ecosystem; they provide homes for many native species of insects & birds, everything from ants & bees to woodpeckers & ospreys. This one stands surrounded by Saw Palmetto and Slash Pine in the Pine Flatwoods environment deep in the Jay B. Starkey Wilderness Park, part of the Starkey Wilderness Preserve in west Pasco County, Florida.
