Detail of a rock-hewn the church in the historic town of Lalibela in Northern Ethiopia. Built in the early thirteenth century. Lalibela is one of Ethiopia's holiest cities and a center of pilgrimage. The place is worldwide famous for its monolithic churches (fully carved out of the purple limestone) which play an important part in the history of rock-cut architecture. There are 11 chuches, all built in the 12th and 13th centuries and they are in service until these days. Lalibela is an UNESCO World Heritage Site and is belonging to the 'Historic Route' in Northern Ethiopia, a combination of the most important tourism spots.
