Medium to tall, hairy perennial, stems erect to ascending. Basal leaves elliptical, often broadest above the middle, generally untoothed, often blotched with purple, the upper leaves sometimes toothed. Flowers lilac to dark-violet-blue, rarely pink or whitish, in rounded heads, 15-25mm; florets more or less equal in size, sometimes only female.
Habitat: Damp places, on calcareous to slightly acid soils.
Flowering Season: July-October.
Distribution: Throughout Europe, except Spitsbergen.

This is not a common Species in the described Habitats in the Netherlands (most Nature Reserves).

The Plant is known as Herbal Medicine.
