Dunstanburgh Castle, rated at one time among the largest and grandest castles in the north of England, is still one of the most dramatic and atmospheric castles in Britain. Although the ruin presents a formidable and imposing sight from a distance, to see the castle close up requires a coastal walk of over a mile from the nearby village of Craster. Dating from the 14th century, Dunstanburgh is naturally protected on two sides by a sheer cliff face of over 100 feet and the North Sea.
