Description
The Erawan Shrine sits in the heart of the city of Bangkok at Ratchaprasong intersection. It was originally built in 1956 to counter bad luck besetting the original adjacent Erawan Hotel. This four-faced Brahma and Hindu statue was designed and made by the Department of Fine Arts and enshrined on November 9th of that year. The original Erawan Hotel was later demolished in 1987 and the land then used for the location of the subsequently built Grand Hyatt Eawan Hotel. The original Erawan Shrine statue was attacked and demolished in March 2006 by a man believed to be mentally challenged. The statue was replaced within three months by a newer statue, made of plaster, precious metals and fragments from the original statue. This famous public shrine continues today to attract many local and foreigners visitors, who pay respect and adorn the Shrine with flowers, garland and burning incense. Classical Thai dance perfomances are also perfomed thoughout each day at this famous city attraction.
