North Everglades entrance, Observation Tower. Good view of the flat marsh/grassland area of Everglades National Park - South Florida. Sunset time.

Everglades National Park is a national park in the U.S. state of Florida. The largest subtropical wilderness in the United States. It is the third-largest national park in the lower 48 states after Death Valley National Park and Yellowstone National Park. It has been declared an International Biosphere Reserve, a World Heritage Site, and a Wetland of International Importance. The Everglades is a slow-moving system of rivers, flowing southwest at about .25 miles (0.40 km) per day, fed by the Kissimmee River and Lake Okeechobee.

One of the key plant of this ecosystem is sawgrass. Sawgrass growing to a length of 6 feet (1.8 m) or more, along with broad-leafed marsh plants, are so prominent in this region that they gave the Everglades its nickname "River of Grass". Excellent locations for bird rookeries, sloughs in the Everglades attract a great variety of wading birds such as herons, egrets, roseate spoonbills, ibises and pelicans, as well as limpkins and snail kites that eat apple snails, which in turn feed on the sawgrass.

The ecosystems in Everglades National Park have suffered significantly from human activity, and the repair and restoration of the Everglades is a politically charged issue in South Florida.
