A most distinctive small tufted fern, its dark green wintergreen pinnately lobed leaves, 3-5cm long, being conspicuously encrusted beneath by rusty scales that often hide the spore-cases, along the veins.
Spores ripe May-Augustus.
Habitat: Walls, rocks, often on calcareous soils.
Distribution: Britain, Western & Southern Europe.
