Kannur, India - December 22, 2011: A photograph of deep sea fishermen transferring a large catch of sardine from the net into smaller "delivery" boats which then take the sardine straight to the wholesale markets on shore. The shot was taken a few miles off the coast of Kannur in the north of Kerala state in south India. The photograph shows the effort and coordination required by the fishing crew in such an operation on board the fishing vessel "Om" sailing from Mapilla Bay harbour, Kannur.

Fishing and fish are synonymous in Kannur district of Kerala, south India. Kannur is situated towards the north end of Kerala state. Meals in this part of Kerala almost invariably include fish. The casual visitor cannot help but notice that almost every method known to man is used to catch fish. Deep sea fishing in Kannur is still very much labour intensive. Crews of up to 40 men (no women at the time of writing) set out to sea in wooden vessels with a single outboard motor. The crew cast the long nets and with a great feat of coordination pull the catch of fish in. Whilst still in the net the fish are then transferred to smaller "delivery" boats which take the fish directly to market. This photograph shows one such fishing crew on board the vessel "Om" deep out at sea pulling in a catch, in this case, of sardine.
