Mamallapuram, India - November 17, 2011: A view of the Five Rathas (aka as Pancha Rathas) which are 7th century Hindu shrines and examples of rock-cut architecture. Each of the Rathas is carved from a single monolith of pink granite. The shot was taken early morning from the eastern side and a storm was brewing.

Each of the Five Rathas were apparently carved from a single monoliths of pink granite back in the 7th Century. The story goes that an Englishman riding along on his horse, during the time of the British Raj in India, and noticed something interesting buried in the sand. Excavations followed and the Five Rathas emerged. The five monolithic Hindu shrines are named after the Pandavas (Arjuna, Bhima, Yudhishtira, Nakula, Sahadeva). This photograph was taken at dawn. A storm is brewing although the sun is just above the horizon (not in the photo)and seconds after this photograph the heavens opened.
