Description

In 1965 my wife and I took our first road trip, up the California in our brand new Mustang. Our stop at Fort Ross inspired a near 50-year interest in 19th century western forts (documented in our video, Forts of the Frontier West--see www.fortsofthefrontierwest.com). We re-visited the fort in 2010, and I wanted to shoot it from the same angle as the sketch we both remembered from our fourth-grade California History book. An hour of scrambling over the headlands south of the fort provided this shot. Fort Ross was established in 1812 by Russian settlers (hence the original name, Fort Russ) and was the southernmost Russian colony in the Pacific Northwest. It was bought by John Augustus Sutter in 1843.
