Description

Virtually on the Scottish Border, this crenellated salmon coop is situated on the banks of the River Esk. Although coops are normally associated with the keeping of poultry, the term is also used to refer to a device for trapping salmon. The folly is a striking example of a Gothic pavillion and was built around 1772 for the Reverend Robert Graham who was the owner of the nearby Netherby Hall. It overlooks the site of a stone weir which was used for fishing. After the weir failed, the house became derelict, briefly being converted to a home in the 1930's by a shepherd.
