C. albicans is the most common cause of human candidiasis. Problems in humans arise when patients are suffering from malnutrition, diabetes or during antibiotic treatment.
For better diagnosis the agar plate contains a cromogenic substrate which, is hydrolyzed only by Candida albicans and causes typical blueish or greenish blue colonies.
Furthermore, incubation for about 2 days at higher temperatures effects characteristic strands called pseudohyphae but, this depends mostly on additional conditions during culturing.
