Gatun, Panama-March 6, 2011:The Gatun Locks, Panama, where ships are raised and lowered through three locks totaling an 85 foot drop or gain depending on the direction of travel through the Panama Canal from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean. The locks work on gravity, not pumps. Water being supplied by Lake Gatun. Here one of the gates that opens and closes can be seen, with water levels high on one side, low on the other.
