Description
National Forest property in Yavapai County, Arizona provides limited nutrition for grazing cattle, and a Hereford steer with ear tags looks at the camera as if to register her disapproval. Browsing in the dry grass and desert scrub requires constant foraging, with little hope of water. Ranchers are allowed to release herds on large tracts of National Forest land as part of Arizona's open range policy, but are forced to round them up and move them routinely to new tracts as cows quickly deplete the available edible vegetation. Water is provided often only after transporting it to livestock tanks by ranch workers. Ranchers are required to maintain barbed wire fencing and repair damage to private or public property. The ear tags on this female carry her Animal Identification Number (AIN) - as part of a specific rancher's herd. Sedona, Arizona, 2012.
