Charles Lane is in the West Village of Manhattan. The historic narrow alley from Washington to West Street is all that remains of the northern boundary of Newgate State Prison, which stood at the foot of the Hudson River at this location from 1797 until the 1820s. Also known as Pig Alley, Charles Lane was later repaved with the original and unique cobblestones in the 1890's. Similar old fashioned colonial cobblestones not seen anywhere else in the city. Today, in 2012 a modern glass high rise residential building dominates the cityscape view in West Greenwich Village, Manhattan, New York City.
