Niteroi, Brazil – April 11, 2008: The historic Santa Cruz Fortress built by the Portuguese to guard the entrance to Guanabara Bay from invaders. The Portuguese empire ruled Brazil from April 22, 1500 until September 7, 1822. Across the entrance to the Bay, in the Rio de Janeiro city, the Portuguese built the same period the São João Fortress. Both were built with granite blocks of 1 cubic meter each, cemented with clay and whale oil.

Fortaleza de Santa Cruz, situada em Niterói, cidade vizinha à do Rio de Janeiro, foi construída pelos portugueses em um dos lados da entrada da Baía de Guanabara, sendo o principal acesso marítimo à região portuária da cidade do Rio de Janeiro.
