Højerup old church was built around 1250-1300 A.D on top of the Stevns limestone cliff. In 1928 the chancel fell into the sea due to erosion of the cliff. According to a local myth, the church took a tiny step away from the abyss every christmas night, but to no avail.
Stevns limestone cliff is now on the Unesco world heritage tentative list. A 5 to 10 cm layer of fish clay between the bottom and top layer of the cliff contains an unearthly large amount of Iridium, thought to stem from an asteroid impact 65 million years ago - the impact that eradicated the dinosaurs. Study of the cliff was key in establishing this theory.
