Developed in 1974 at the University of Minnesota and released in 1991, Honeycrisp apples are a cross between Macoun & Honeygold varieties. Honeycrisps have a characteristic two toned colouring and are widely regarded as the best tasting raw apple. In 2006 the Honeycrisp was named as the state fruit of Minnesota. Their production in Nova Scotia is subsidised, and they very much represent the future of the apple growing industry.
