Description

Saint Peter's Square (Italian: Piazza San Pietro) is located directly in front of St. Peter's basilica in the Vatican City. Vatican City is a sovereign and independent city-state whose territory consists of a walled enclave within the city of Rome. It guarantees the spiritual freedom of the Pope. The four-thousand-year-old Egyptian obelisk in the center of the square was erected at the current site in 1568. Gian Lorenzo Bernini designed the square 100 years later, including the visitors-embracing colonnades. The fountain constructed by Gian Lorenzo Bernini in 1675 matches the older fountain by Carlo Maderno (1613). The Basilica of Saint Peter is a Late Renaissance church. It was designed by Donato Bramante, Michelangelo, Carlo Maderno and Gian Lorenzo Bernini, and remains one of the largest churches in the world. Michelangelo's dome rises to a total height of 448.1 ft and is the tallest dome in the world. From the lantern of the dome, millions of visitors every year can see the panorama of Rome until the Alban Hills and Apennines.
