Shrub or small tree to 6m, bushy or columnar. Leaves greyish, in whorls of three, spine-tipped, with a single white band beneath. Flowers yellow, male and female on separate plants.
Female cones rounded, berry-like, 6-9mm, green at first, later bluish-black. The cones ripen in the second or third years.
Flowering Season: May-June.
Habitat: Coniferous woodland, moors, scrub, on calcareous soils, to 1500m. In the Netherlands a scarce species on dry Heath Lands on acid soils.
Distribution: Throughout Europe, except Spitsbergen.
