Description

The flower genus Kniphofia is called by a number of names, including tritoma, red hot poker, torch lily, knofflers and poker plant. There are some 70 different 'red hot pokers', all of which are native to Africa. When in bloom the flowers produce a lot of nectar, which makes them attractive to bees.

In this particular example, it is another insect that has come to feed: the black bean aphid Aphis fabae, also known as black fly. Black fly concentrate their attack on newer areas of growth, and it is noticeable that they were concentrated at the tip of this red hot poker flower.
