Description

A deep pink lotus bud beginning to open its petals blossom is pictured against leaves in the background.

The lotus, or Nelumbo nucifera, is an aquatic perennial plant and is a member of the Nelumbonaceae family. The leaves of the plant float on the water surface while the roots of the plant grow in the soil beneath. The flower can be white or pink and then becomes a seed pod shaped like a half-sphere.

Stamens from the lotus blossom can be used for herbal tea. Parts of plant used for herbal medicine. Seeds may be ground into paste for pastries (mooncake, daifuku, rice flour pudding).
