Ludzidzini Royal Village, Swaziland - September, 2 2007: Girls washing themselves in the river before traditional Reed Dance (Umhlanga). Once a year unmarried and childless Swazi girls and women travel from their villages to participate in the eight-day event. First they go to collect bunches of reed and bring them back to the Queen Mother to be used in repairing holes in village fence. Later they parade, dance and perform for the king, who currently has fourteen wives, and he is choosing the next wife during the ceremony.

Description

The Umhlanga (Reed Dance) is a traditional dance where twenty to thirty thousand of Swaziland's maidens congregate and dance for the king (currently Mswati III). The young women, aged between about four and twenty, wear beads, short skirts and long tassels which denote their betrothenhood, and many are bare-breasted.
