Atlantic Coast, Barbados -- December 29, 2011: A man who has just broken open a coconut offers a single slice. Coconut slicing is a common activity for people on Barbados to do for tourists. The population of Barbados is descended from West Africans who were brought by the British to the island in slavery but freed in 1834.
Although tourism drives the economy in Barbados, they also have a great many coconut palms, and enjoy the coconut meat as well as the milk. These are often mixed with rum, which is made from the primary remaining crop on Barbados: Sugar cane.
