Description
Thistle flowerheads in sunrise lighting. Silybum marianum - milk thistle - is an annual or biannual plant of the Asteraceae family. This variety has lavender-magenta flowers and shiny pale green leaves with white veins. Thistle is the common name of a group of flowering plants characterised by leaves with sharp prickles on the margins. Prickles often occur all over the plant – on stem and leaf surfaces - and are an adaptation that protects against herbivorous animals, discouraging them from feeding on the plant. Sedona, Arizona, 2008.
