New Zealand Flax in Flower with a classic clear New Zealand spring sky. It is also known by it's Maori name Harakeke. The rigid flower stalks can be up to five metres long, projecting high above the foliage. The first settlers called it "flax" because its fibres were similar to that of true flax found in other parts of the world. Though it is commonly still called flax today, harakeke is really a lily. It is unique to New Zealand and is one of it's oldest plant species.
