Description

A Roman Emperor, possibly Tiberius or Claudius, makes an offering to the gods in his capacity as pharaoh of all Egypt. The gods are probably Hathor, goddess of love, beauty, music and motherhood, her consort Horus (more normally depicted as a falcon) and their son Ihy, who wears the double crown of Egypt (the Pschent). The emperor’s crown represents a departure from the normal range associated with the pharaohs and includes the solar disk, symbol of divine authority. This may represent Rome’s domination of Egypt during this period. The relief is located o the west wall of the main Temple of Hathor, Dendera, Egypt. Dedicated to Hathor, the main temple dates from the Graeco-Roman era although a temple stood on the site during the Old Kingdom.
