A model of a molecule of oxytocin. It is a hormone produced naturally in large amounts at childbirth, causing contractions, and to stimulate the flow of milk for breastfeeding. The hormone also increases sexual arousal, induces maternal behaviour, increases a sense of social bonding and empathy, and reduces anxiety. Because of these effects, it is sometimes known as the 'love hormone'.
