At the time it was first lit, it was one of the highest lighthouses in the country -- at over 600 feet. Which is why it didn't work most of the time. Fog and low cloues often shroud the top of Point Loma, rendering the light useless. The lighthouse is now part of Cabrillo National Monument in San Diego.
