Eumachia was a public priestess and matron of the guild of fullers, an important group of tradespeople who cleaned and prepared cloth. She erected this impressive building for the guild, maybe as a warehouse or auction house.

The letters that are visible on this entablature include NUMISTRI FRON [to], the name of the son of Eumachia.

The full dedication is to the Concordia Augusta, a cult that promoted the deified Emperor Augustus, and would have read:

Eumachia, daughter of Lucius, a public priestess, in her own name, and in the name of her son, Murcus Numistrius Fronto, made the chalcidicum, the crypta and the porticus with her own money and dedicated the same to Concordia Augusta and to Pietas
