Description
One of the colourful sights as summer fades to autumn are these bright round berries on hawthorn Crataegus monogyna bushes. Besides brightening up the landscape through autumn and the Christmas period, they provide food for birds and other creatures.

Despite their appearance, haws are 'pomes' and not berries. Although edible, they are more usually added to jellies, jams, syrups or wine.
