Description

'Sunk relief from the Roman mammisi (birth house), Temple of Hathor, Dendera, Egypt. The relief depicts the emperor Trajan making an offering to the goddess Hathor who is suckling her son Hr-Ihy. Behind Hathor stand another image of her son with a finger in his mouth to indicate childhood. Trajan wears the Red Crown of Lower Egypt (the Deshret) while Hathor wears the solar disk and horns and Hr-Ihy wears the Blue Crown (the Khepresh) of Egypt. Dedicated to Hathor, goddess of love, beauty, music and motherhood, the main temple dates from the Graeco-Roman era although a temple stood on the site during the Old Kingdom.'
